Home Pod – Painting

The walls up and finished next stage in the revamp of the home pod was to start freshening the bare wooden walls with some paint. Over the years the wood had darkened by sunlight and where furniture had previously been placed the colours were all wrong. So a coat of paint was the solution.

Office Pod

Thinking about a Pod for use as an office or studio, it gets you out of the house and into a building which has a shape to help you concentrate on your work. The Arkipod is a perfect building for work, easy to heat and light.

A few photos of how your Arkipod could look.

Home Pod – Partitioning

Once the floor was done we had a sketched plan of how to divide the floor space and make a proper bedroom and turn the stairs around from their original position. This gave a more homely feel to the floor space and even though obviously the one space now becomes two the living area steel feels spacious due to all the natural light that floods in through the windows.

Stud wall up and temporarily the stairs in place
Stairs now bolted in to place and one side of the wall sheeted.
You can’t beat a sketched out plan, scale drawing….
Nice use of the space under the stairs with a bench that also provides storage.

Home Pod the 12th year Revamp

So twelve years on from building the grass roofed visitors “shed” we decided to do a revamp and create a crafted comfortable chalet style accommodation for four people. Initially it was a complete empty of the building and then grinding down the concrete floor to get a polished concrete floor rather than the screed painted finish that we had for the last twelve years. The contractor who put the floor in all those years ago could have done a better job. So this was the place to start.

The floor twelve years of use all scratched and a few cracks

We hired a concrete grinder and spent a day running over and over the floor, cleaning up the dust each time. It was a hard day, but the 24 hour hire period was non negotiable so we worked hard.

This machine weighed a ton, however it was very easy to use, apart from all the cleaning between run overs

We are very happy with the finish, and went on to use a floor sealer “smartseal” product to give the concrete a deep sheen finish, it’s very nice.

The floor before sealing
Many coats of sealant gave a lovely finish, here the sealant is still drying.

So we now have a clean flat and sealed floor, very happy with it and a nice platform to work from.

Watch a short film made whilst we were sealing the floor

Arkipod Home Pod

Arkipod started a long time ago, germinating in the mind. Previous builds on the West Coast of Ireland date back ten years plus with 25 square meter buildings including bedrooms, showers and toilets. The 25 m² rule applies a lot in Ireland and it is a good size for spare space. The building below was built over ten years ago, sleeps four at ease and has a shower and sink.

Arkipod bigger builds

This one has three separate downstairs rooms, one is the kitchen and living room and then a smaller bedroom and shower toilet room. With a mezzanine upstairs it housed three people for two years. It is now rented out on Air BnB.

the inside shot showing nice woodwork finish, but this is a consumer choice any finish is possible.

Preparation for the grass roof, Arkipod do many roof styles, Grass, Metal, wood and slates are all possible, it is down to personal choice and price.

A very small pod with a double bed downstairs and upstairs too, but nothing else.

A studio build cheaper materials to keep the price down.

Get in touch to talk about our 25m² options.

Arkipod Mini almost finished

Well after some intensive work the family has almost finished the Arkipod Mini. The frame was sheeted and insulated. A vapour barrier was then applied and finished with corrugated metal sheeting. We really like this finish, should last a very long time.

Another great thing about the construction techniques we are using is that once the covering is worn out it can be removed and replaced easily.

All that is needed now is to finish the end caps for the roof, install the door and windows and put the finishing layer over the gable ends. This Arkipod Mini should retail at under 5000€ which makes it a great proposition for people looking for some extra space, or even to use for an income using the Air BnB website, if you have a cool place to put it, it will rent.

This Arkipod has an interior which is 8 foot wide and 10 foot long, from a camping point of view easily big enough for four people sharing, or alternatively with some nice furniture a cosy romantic couples Arkipod.
